Good afternoon,
There is always something new that comes around. No one ever thought we would be dealing with smoke from fires in Canada affecting our air quality. The schools restricted outside activities. The health department worked with Parks and Rec to guide users of our fields. During the week, the field use has been by residents out of town. Anyway, we are hopefully done with this by today.
This week is graduation for Helen Keller Middle School on June 16 and Joel Barlow High School on June 13. Congratulations to all our graduates and to their families. It is also a great time to recognize our teachers, staff members and administrators who are so dedicated and do such a wonderful job with our young people.
Many in town attended the Planning and Zoning Commission meetings where there were presentations regarding affordable housing legislation before the Connecticut House and Senate. In the end, no legislation regarding affordable housing was passed. The state did approve early voting rules to begin in 2024. We are still looking to understand exactly how this will work and be funded. The only apparent certainty is that there will be 14 days of early voting in the next presidential election, 4 days of early voting for primaries and 7 days early voting for municipal elections. There will be no early voting for referenda. More details will be forthcoming.
On June 4, there was a concert at the Ashlar-Aspetuck lodge to benefit our sister city Sviatohirsk in Ukraine. First of all, a hearty thank you to the lodge brothers for hosting this wonderful event and also thanks to the two bands who provided the music, Mill River Band and Roots Oscura. It was well attended and together with the pop-up sale at the Senior Center earlier in the day we raised more than $3,000. Again, this is a great cause for our town. There are more events planned, thanks to our hardworking steering committee. Please consider donating at Ukraine International Aid
The first concert on the hill at Christ Church will be held on June 18 with the annual Juneteenth celebration. The concert on June 25 will be a celebration of pride month. Gates open at 5:30pm. Food trucks, ice cream, beer and wine, BYOB picnics, leashed dogs welcome. $10 adults/$7 seniors/kids free.
