12/23/2020 A Message from First Selectman Bindelglass

EASTON RESERVOIR TREE

Good afternoon,

Apparently, 2020 wants to continue to mess with us until the absolute last minute! Beginning Christmas Eve night, the winds will begin to increase followed by heavy rain continuing into Christmas morning after which time the temperature will drop sharply into Saturday. This could cause significant icing.  Please prepare appropriately. You can find guidelines on our town website.  Downed trees and flooding are both possible, so please restrict travel during the storm. Be careful and cautious around areas where there are downed trees or wires or flooding.  Our first responders risk their own lives to rescue you if you put yourself in danger, and we want to avoid that at all costs.

As members of the medical staff of Bridgeport Hospital, my wife Gloria and I were given our first dose of the Pfizer vaccine yesterday. Other than slight soreness in our arms (like a medium bruise), we are fine and happy to participate in the process.   Our emergency workers in town should start to get vaccinated next week. This provides the beginning of the light at the end of the tunnel. There was no big COVID surge in our area unlike some parts of the country where there was a horrific spike in cases in the weeks following Thanksgiving.  I choose to believe this is because as a community, we were relatively good about limiting gatherings, wearing masks and social distancing. Although I always worry, I hope we can look forward to the same respect for safety over the Christmas holiday weekend.  I know how difficult that is for all of us, but we can begin to be able to look forward to the end of this pandemic. We must continue to be cautious and diligent until we get there.

Throughout my first year as First Selectman, I have come to recognize how extraordinary our town employees and the jobs they do for us are. There was so much that I really never appreciated, even in my 26 years living here in Easton.  Sometimes, that service reaches truly heroic levels as was the case of Officer Anthony Telesco who rescued one of our residents and his dog who were in distress after the owner followed his dog into the pond in front of Helen Keller Middle School. Thanks to the officer’s bravery both were brought to safety with no ill effects. THANK YOU Officer Telesco!

I want to wish you all a very happy and peaceful holiday season. Stay safe, be well and be careful, both with the approaching storm and from potential exposure to COVID.
