Good afternoon,

The Easton Arts Council invites you to the Winter Celebration of the Arts opening reception for the Annual Member Art Show on Saturday, January 13th from 7:00pm-10:00pm at the Easton Public Library. Come celebrate the magical power of artistic expression viewing paintings, photographs and sculptures by some of the area’s most talented artists.

The Easton Senior Center’s Holiday Boutique will be extended through January 19th offering 50% off all items. The boutique features quality items for all — children’s toys, pets, housewares, hostess gifts, lamps, spa products, jewelry, designer bags, decor, and more. Cash and checks are accepted. All proceeds benefit the Easton Senior Center.

Dan Simonelli, our town municipal agent will be doing a round table event for seniors and non-seniors. Please come and ask Dan or Val Buckley questions about programs and resources that are available to the senior population.  This is a good opportunity for individuals to plan not only for themselves, but for their family members who may need some extra care either now or in the future. It will be on January 19th at the Senior Center from 11:30am-1pm. Anyone who would like to attend can sign up by calling me at 203-268-1137 - Lunch will be served.

The second installment real estate tax bills as well as supplemental motor vehicle tax bills were due as of January 1, 2024, but are payable without interest until February 1, 2024.

At the last board of selectmen meeting, a resident proposed making some changes to the structure of town hall staffing. Specifically, they recommended that the office of treasurer and the position of finance director be merged together. The reasoning was that having an elected treasurer was unhelpful because; (1) there was no way to ensure that the elected person was qualified, (2) there might be friction and a difficult working relationship between the director of finance and treasurer, and (3) the belief that there was not enough work for two people. For background, there have been discussions in the past about the roles of treasurer, town clerk and tax collectors being appointed. This may be an opportunity to discuss possibly changing some or all of these positions from elected to appointed, ensuring that people come into these positions based on their qualifications, and devoid of politics. There could also be a discussion as to whether or not there are redundancies between the jobs of treasurer and finance director. I plan to pursue at least a conversation on these topics in the future.

I will be holding a “brown bag meeting” on January 25th, at the town hall conference room, at 7:00pm.  All are welcome. This is a chance to have an informal discussion about any topic that folks are interested in. I look forward to seeing you there.

Town offices will be closed on Monday, January 15th in observance of Martin Luther King Day.

Have a good weekend,

Dave
