3/22/2024 A Message from First Selectman Bindelglass

Nate Knorr Recognition

Good Afternoon,

The Easton Dog Park will be closed from Monday, March 25th through Friday, April 5th to replace the fence around the park.

Officer Tamra French and K-9 TJ won the Hometown Heroes Grant Giveaway 1st prize of $5,000 with 11,702 votes! Thank you to everyone who voted and participated in the giveaway and showed outpouring support for our Police K-9 Units.

Due to changes in the disposition of recycled materials, not all items recycled via single stream are as cost-effective for towns as they once were. Glass, however, continues to be of value if it is clean and meets the guidelines below. Please consider separating glass from your other recyclables and deposit them in the designated area at the Trumbull Transfer station. Accepted glass includes: rinsed glass bottles (redeemable and non-redeemable), food jars, wine and liquor bottles – NOTE: remove and discard lids, tops and corks because they can jam the machines. Unaccepted items are: mirrors; window glass; drinking glasses; glass, ceramic, or clay plates, cups, pots or bakeware; lightbulbs.  Separation of clean glass prevents contamination and improves the value of the recycled items. The clean glass can be sold and recycled into new bottles and jars or other products such as industrial filler for cement, and the higher quality mixed recycling commodities become more marketable.

The Annual Boy Scout Gourmet Breakfast is this Saturday, March 23rd at Easton Community Center from 7:30am to noon. Tickets may be purchased at the door or by emailing Troop66Breakfast@gmail.com.

The Special Town Meeting for the Town of Easton will be held on Monday, March 25, 2024, at 7:00pm at Samuel Staples Elementary School, 515 Morehouse Road, Easton with Public Hearing immediately following. The agenda and documentation for the town meeting can be found on the website home page. All three items have the unanimous support of the Board of Selectmen. It is our belief that none of these items are controversial, so the items will be approved by vote at the meeting and no referendum is planned. For the Board of Education appropriation, I recommend reading the Op-ed piece in the Easton Courier from board chair Randy Hicks. https://eastoncourier.news/2024/03/20/op-ed-requests-support-to-cover-school-budget-shortfall/   Again, I cannot stress enough that this is a legislative body and participation is critical. Every citizen is significantly affected by at least one of these items. Please plan to attend.  Following the town meeting there will be a public hearing with presentations of the Easton and Region 9 budgets. Citizens will be able to give their input at that time, before the Board of Finance and Region 9 Board finalize their budgets for the April 29th Annual Town Meeting and the subsequent referendum on May 7th.

The Town of Monroe will be hosting a public information meeting regarding the upcoming project to replace the bridge located along Judd Road over the Mill River.  The meeting will be held at the Monroe Town Hall located at 7 Fan Hill Road in the Council Chambers on Monday, April 15th at 6:00pm. This is a joint project between The Town of Monroe and The Town of Easton.  It is, however, by agreement being managed by public works in Monroe since the bridge straddles the town line. The purpose of the meeting is to provide information to the residents of both Monroe and Easton on topics such as where residents can expect to obtain information on project updates, anticipated construction date, anticipated construction timeline, and potential traffic detours.

The Planning and Zoning Commission met this week to review a special permit for an application for a home-based dumpster business at 120 Maple Rd. Several residents raised concerns. No action was taken and the application remains open. There was also a discussion about tax breaks for land including hiking trails. The board continues to work on upgrades to the zoning regulations, mostly to bring them into line with state statutes.

Last night at the Board of Selectman we were privileged to honor Nathaniel Knorr who won an essay contest for Barlow students entitled,” Voice of Democracy” sponsored by VFW post 10059.  There was also a presentation on a program to manage organic waste with a home-based program. We will seek further information on this. More details on the site work for the EMS renovation was discussed.

Enjoy your weekend,

Dave
