06/24/2022 A Message from First Selectman Bindelglass
In regards to COVID, hospitalization numbers in the state are slowly decreasing. I believe there is a very slow but steady improvement.
This week marked graduations from Samuel Staples, Helen Keller, and Joel Barlow High School. This is a good time to be thankful for all the hard work of our dedicated teachers and administrators. The graduating students and their families have weathered the pandemic and all its effects. As a town, we admire and are proud of them.
With school out, work will intensify repairing the roof at 660 Morehouse (Old Staples). Chip sealing continues. We have been notified that the judge of the state superior court has handed down a decision regarding the building of a slaughterhouse on the chicken farm at 59 Tranquility. Dr. Judge Berger ruled that the slaughterhouse can NOT be built. This is an important decision for the town.
At the same time, the Planning and Zoning Commission has been considering changes to the regulations regarding farming to limit accessory activities on farms. Planning and Zoning is also considering changes to the zoning regulations which could allow for the acceptance of some existing accessory apartments, particularly in return for deed restricting them as affordable dwellings, consistent with plans laid out in our affordable housing plan.
As you may remember Planning and Zoning obtained funds for two gateway signs to Easton. They sponsored a contest in the elementary and middle schools to design the signs. There were so many wonderful entries that they decided to make two signs which combined pieces of multiple children’s designs. The signs are absolutely spectacular and unique as you can see above. Planning and zoning are deciding where to put these signs as a special welcome to our wonderful town.
The Board of Selectmen regular meeting for Thursday, July 7th is cancelled.
An evening with the First Selectman is scheduled for Tuesday, June 28th at 7:00pm in the Easton Public Library conference room.
The Tax Collector’s Office is mailing tax bills early next week and are due July 1, 2022 and payable without interest until August 1, 2022. Taxes will be available for viewing and payment online at www.eastonct.gov as of July 1st.
As a reminder, if you need a recycling container or yours is damaged, please contact RWS at 203-334-1660. Also, please refer to the Easton Courier article on June 15th regarding the contamination of Easton’s recycling mainly with plastic bags https://eastoncourier.news/2022/06/15/you-might-not-be-recycling-as-well-as-you-think/ Please keep in mind that the town pays fines or rather, the tax payors do for contamination.
Please remember to renew your dog’s license by June 30th to avoid a penalty fee.
