The Town of Easton is highly dependent on volunteers who serve on our boards and commissions to function effectively.  As a result, the Board of Selectmen takes its obligation to protect those who serve in these positions from threat or harm very seriously.  Those protections and other policies are listed in the “Welcome to Public Service” packet which all members receive after being sworn in.  This packet is available on this page of the town website. Additionally, the town has an insurance policy from Travelers that covers board and commission members acting in their official capacity.  This insurance policy can be viewed by the public at the Director of Finance’s office.  Furthermore, the purposeful harassment of public officials, and specifically, the posting of personal information in public places is unacceptable.  The Board of Selectmen is steadfast and united in its commitment to this principle.

Applying for Boards & Commissions

The Democratic and Republican Town Committees assist the town in recruiting, interviewing and nominating applicants for open positions. Each committee has its own process for reviewing and vetting candidates.

Individuals who choose not to apply for appointment through either town committee can apply to fill a vacancy through the first selectmen's office. Both town committees agree to respect such a choice.

The process for candidates who choose to self-nominate through the first selectmen's office is as follows:

  • Submit in writing a letter stating your interest, including the specific position you wish to be considered for and why you are interested.
  • Submit a resume or equivalent relevant background.
  • The first selectman will review submitted information and may choose to interview the applicant.
  • The first selectman will share with the Board of Selectmen the submitted information, giving the board the opportunity to ask questions, prior to consideration for appointment. Interviews of self-nominating applicants may be conducted during a Board of Selectmen meeting. Appointments may be considered at the same meeting or a subsequent meeting.

This process applies to all candidates who choose to self-nominate, regardless of political affiliation. The goal is to seat the most qualified candidates to serve the town.
