A Message from the First Selectman

GRAD 2021

grad

Good afternoon,

I want to congratulate the Easton Courier for winning four local Awards for Excellence in Journalism from the prestigious Society of Professional Journalists.  The online version of the Courier has become a must-read publication providing timely information throughout the pandemic, and a forum for public opinion during these turbulent times. Personally, the online paper has provided another way for the town to keep people informed about what is going on in Easton.

UI has nearly completed the tree trimming around our power lines, they have committed to bringing crews back into town to retrace their routes for cleanup. A number of residents have complained about tree debris left on their property or on the road shoulder in front of their homes.  UI has committed to pick up and remove said debris within the next month. Please keep an eye out for them if this involves your property, and let Town Hall know if they are missing debris which should be picked up.

At the beginning of the year, Phil Doremus, the Town of Easton’s Zoning and Wetlands Enforcement Officer, and I began a discussion about his future plans. Phil has served the Town of Easton for over twenty years in this capacity. I learned, as a new First Selectman, that the answer to almost any historical question was answered by going to Phil!  Phil has announced that he will retire on July 31, 2021.  We will find an appropriate way to celebrate his many years of dedicated service to our town. Thank you so very much, Phil.

As we begin to put together plans for our 9/11 Remembrance, I would again ask that anyone who has stories or memories that they would like to share with our community, to please get in touch with me. For planning purposes, please get in touch by the end of June.

If you are interested in the town having an option for a cable/internet provider (and I believe many of us are) PLEASE register your interest with GoNetspeed by going to the website https://gonetspeed.com/How-It-Works and signing up as interested.

“GoNetspeed is continually expanding and bringing Crazy Fast Internet to new areas! GoNetspeed is evaluating future new areas to expand to. Please click on "Check Availability" and enter your address. This will help us keep track of interest in your area and help bring GoNetspeed to your neighborhood faster!”  As of today, Easton need approximately 400 more households to show interest to bring this service to our area.

Last week we talked about the prevalence of signs in town and I referenced the Zoning Regulations regarding those signs. On MONDAY, June 14th, ALL illegally posted signs will be removed per our published regulations. If you wish to keep your signs, please remove them from town property by Monday. Thank you for your cooperation.

This coming week is graduation for our middle school and high school students.  Helen Keller Middle School 8th graders will be graduating at an outdoor event on Tuesday, June 15th at 5:30 pm at the school.  Joel Barlow High School seniors will be graduating on Wednesday, June 16th at 6:00 pm at the athletic stadium down Turney Road.

On behalf of myself and the Town of Easton, we congratulate the class of 2021.  It was an extraordinary and unpredictable, challenging and unusual year but you all have made it and are moving on. Good luck on all your future endeavors and remember your exceptional resilience for getting through the Year of Covid!
